Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), says he has begun reviewing a high-profile murder case after being publicly asked by one of the accused to examine the circumstances surrounding the investigation.
In a video shared on his social media platforms, VDM said he became interested in the case after a man identified as Ahmed Akin appealed to him to investigate allegations linking him to the deaths of two individuals, identified as Sheriff and Prince Ademola Akinloye.
According to VDM, the accused maintains that he is innocent and alleges that he is being falsely implicated in connection with the deaths because of a longstanding dispute over family and community land. Those claims have not been independently verified.
VDM said his review of the available information had led him to believe that the matter raises broader questions about Nigeria's justice system, adding that he intends to continue examining the evidence before reaching any conclusions.
During the video, the activist presented what he described as background information on the principal individuals connected to the case. He alleged that Ahmed is a retired community figure who is widely known for his philanthropy and influence within his community, while also noting that he has frequently travelled abroad. VDM said he had reviewed immigration records and passport stamps which, according to him, reflected the man's travel history.
He further claimed that Ahmed and one of the deceased, Sheriff, had maintained a close relationship for several years, alleging that Ahmed had supported him financially and assisted him at different stages of his life. These assertions have not been independently verified.
VDM also described the second deceased, Prince Ademola Akinloye, as a respected member of the community who allegedly managed family assets and enjoyed significant influence because of his position within the ruling family.
The activist said the case centres on the Ajero community in Lagos State, an area he described as possessing valuable ancestral land that has been the subject of disputes over ownership, management and the distribution of proceeds from land sales.
According to VDM, disagreements over the administration of community land created divisions among community leaders, with differing views on how revenue generated from land transactions should be shared among residents. These claims have not been verified by independent authorities.
He also recounted the circumstances surrounding the death of Sheriff, stating that the victim was reportedly shot by unidentified assailants after attending a burial ceremony in a neighbouring community in April 2023. VDM stressed that his investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings is ongoing.
The activist said he plans to release additional findings as he continues his review of the case, while encouraging the relevant law enforcement agencies and the courts to ensure that justice is served.
As of the time of filing this report, the allegations and claims discussed by VDM remain unverified, and no court has made findings on the issues he raised. The criminal proceedings connected to the case are expected to determine the facts based on evidence presented before the court.
