Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has said he remains committed to his activism despite years of arrests, detention and legal battles, insisting that he will not compromise his principles for political office.
Speaking during an interview, Sowore reflected on his years of confrontation with successive Nigerian governments, saying the personal cost of his activism has been significant but has not weakened his resolve.
According to him, he has faced repeated arrests and prosecutions because of his advocacy, including after publicly campaigning for improved welfare for police officers. He claimed that after some officers benefited from promotions and welfare improvements, he was later arrested, alleging that information leading to his arrest came from within the police.
Sowore said that experiences like these have led some people to advise him to leave Nigeria, but he rejected that option.
"I'm not dying for Nigerians. I'm dying for what I believe is right for my country," he said, explaining that his activism is driven by his convictions rather than personal recognition.
The former presidential candidate also dismissed suggestions that he should soften his criticism of political leaders or join established political coalitions to gain power.
According to Sowore, he is unwilling to align himself with politicians or political parties whose actions he believes have contributed to Nigeria's governance challenges.
He argued that meaningful political reform cannot be achieved by compromising with individuals he has long criticized, insisting that political alliances should be based on principles rather than convenience.
Sowore further maintained that Nigeria's political system requires deep institutional reforms, including stronger democratic processes, greater accountability and more transparent governance.
Responding to questions about the risks associated with his activism, he acknowledged that the struggle has come with personal sacrifices but said he has never seriously considered abandoning it.
The activist maintained that an unjust society cannot achieve genuine progress without citizens who are willing to challenge abuse of power and demand accountability.
His remarks have generated reactions on social media, with supporters praising his consistency while critics argue
