Reno Omokri Questions Celebrities Over Negative Portrayal of Nigeria, Urges Balanced National Narrative

 Former presidential aide and social commentator, Reno Omokri, has criticised what he describes as the selective use of social media platforms by Nigerian celebrities to highlight negative narratives about the country.

In a statement shared online, Omokri questioned why some public figures consistently focus on projecting unfavorable stories about Nigeria, while allegedly ignoring positive developments and achievements within the country.

He referenced international examples, including visiting American content creator IShowSpeed, who recently praised Nigerian culture, particularly Nigerian cuisine, during his visit to the country. Omokri contrasted this with what he described as Nigerian celebrities who, according to him, use their platforms primarily to criticize the government and the state.

He also cited historical and contemporary examples from global figures and events, arguing that no country is without challenges, yet national pride and positive messaging remain important aspects of public communication.

Omokri further listed several developments he described as positive national milestones, including improvements in infrastructure, education funding initiatives, and economic performance indicators, urging celebrities to also highlight such achievements in their public commentary.

According to him, “celebrity influence should not be used solely to demarket the country,” stressing that public figures have a responsibility to balance criticism with constructive or positive representation.

He argued that patriotism should not only be defined by criticism of government institutions but also by acknowledgment of progress where it exists.

Omokri concluded by questioning the broader impact of consistently negative portrayals of Nigeria on global perception, suggesting that such narratives may influence how the country is viewed internationally.
