Peter Obi Supporter Says Former Governor's Presidency Would Prioritize National Unity, Agriculture and Education

A supporter of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has defended the former governor's vision for Nigeria, saying an Obi presidency would begin by promoting national unity through inclusive governance and practical policy reforms.

Speaking during a television interview, the campaign representative argued that Nigeria remains deeply divided along political, ethnic and economic lines, insisting that rebuilding trust among citizens would be one of Obi's first priorities if elected president.

According to the spokesperson, Obi believes that national unity should be achieved through policies that improve the lives of Nigerians rather than through rhetoric alone.

The campaign representative said Obi has consistently emphasized competence over ethnicity in appointments and leadership, adding that his choice of advisers and associates from different parts of the country demonstrates his commitment to inclusiveness.

He also argued that Nigeria's historical divisions, particularly those dating back to the civil war, require deliberate reconciliation efforts and greater cooperation among all regions.

The spokesperson highlighted agriculture, education and technical skills development as key areas that would receive priority under an Obi administration. He said the former Anambra governor plans to expand agricultural production, improve food security, promote vocational education and reduce the number of out-of-school children.

According to him, Obi's record as governor of Anambra State shows his ability to implement reforms in education and public administration.

During the interview, the presenter questioned how Obi's proposals differ from promises made by previous administrations, noting that successive governments have also pledged improvements in agriculture, education and national unity.

Responding, the campaign representative maintained that Obi's credibility is rooted in what he described as the former governor's governance record rather than campaign promises alone.

The discussion also touched on constitutional reforms and the possibility of devolving more powers to states as part of efforts to strengthen national cohesion. While the spokesperson suggested that institutional reforms would be considered, he emphasized that Obi's immediate focus would be implementing policies aimed at restoring trust in government and improving citizens' welfare.

Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has repeatedly advocated for reforms centred on production, education, fiscal responsibility and inclusive governance. Supporters argue that these priorities would help address Nigeria's economic and social challenges, while critics contend that many of the proposals would require broad political support and significant constitutional and institutional reforms to implement.
