Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has restated his commitment to addressing Nigeria’s long-standing electricity challenges, pledging that his administration would significantly boost power generation and distribution if elected.
Speaking on Nigeria’s energy crisis and infrastructure gaps, Obi pledged that a future government under his leadership would ensure substantial improvement in electricity supply across the country.
“I pledge on behalf of our government that in four years, this country will generate and distribute at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity,” he said.
His statement has reignited discussions around Nigeria’s struggling power sector, which has long been characterized by low generation capacity, frequent grid collapses, and inadequate transmission infrastructure.
Nigeria currently operates a national grid that often struggles to sustain stable supply, with available generation frequently falling short of national demand. The issue has remained a major concern for households, industries, and foreign investors.
Energy experts note that achieving a consistent 10,000MW benchmark would require massive investments in generation assets, transmission upgrades, gas supply stability, and distribution reforms, alongside strong regulatory enforcement.
Supporters of Obi say the pledge reflects a performance-driven governance agenda focused on measurable targets and infrastructure delivery, while critics argue that achieving such goals within four years would require exceptional political will and systemic reforms.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has also continued to pursue reforms in the power sector, including efforts to attract private investment and improve grid reliability.
The statement continues to generate debate across political and policy circles as Nigerians grapple with persistent electricity shortages and search for long-term solutions to the country’s energy crisis.
