At least nine farmers have been killed and several others abducted following a deadly attack by suspected armed bandits on a farming community in the Binin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to community leaders, the attackers stormed farmlands while residents were tending to their crops, opening fire indiscriminately and causing panic as farmers fled for safety. Several victims were killed on the spot, while an unspecified number of others were taken away into nearby forests by the gunmen.
Local sources believe the latest assault was a retaliatory attack after farmers in the community reportedly confronted and killed a suspected bandit who had attempted to rob them days earlier. The killing is said to have angered members of the armed group, who later returned in large numbers to launch the deadly reprisal.
The incident has heightened fear among farming communities in Binin Gwari, an area that has for years remained one of Kaduna State's most vulnerable hotspots for banditry, kidnappings and violent attacks. Residents say repeated assaults have disrupted farming activities, threatened livelihoods and worsened food insecurity across the region.
The latest killings come just days after another attack in Danratu village, also located in the Binin Gwari axis, where at least six farmers were reportedly killed and about 20 others abducted while working on their farms. The recurring violence has forced many farmers to abandon their fields despite the peak farming season, raising concerns over agricultural production and rural safety.
Community leaders have renewed calls on the Federal Government and Kaduna State authorities to deploy more security personnel to farming communities and intensify military operations against armed groups operating in the forests surrounding the area. They warned that unless urgent action is taken, more communities could face similar attacks, further worsening the humanitarian and security situation.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to release an official statement on the latest attack or confirm the number of casualties and abductees. Efforts to rescue those kidnapped and restore confidence among residents are expected to continue as security forces intensify operations in the affected area.
