Journalist Fejiro Oliver Accuses Police of Selective Prosecution, Defends Investigative Reporting

Investigative journalist Fejiro Oliver has criticized the Nigeria Police Force, accusing the force of selective prosecution and attempting to intimidate journalists over their investigative reports.

In a strongly worded statement posted on social media, Oliver alleged that the police had filed charges against him despite his residing outside Nigeria, while failing to prosecute other individuals over separate matters he believes warrant criminal investigation.

Oliver referenced the death of Mary Habila, alleging that authorities had not brought charges against David Umahi in connection with the incident. He also claimed that police instead initiated legal proceedings against him following reports published by Secrets Reporters concerning allegations involving a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Emem Usoro.

According to Oliver, the charges stem from investigative reports alleging the purchase of a property in the United States valued at ₦4.1 billion. He further alleged that the official should instead be investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over claims of money laundering.

Oliver also defended the work of Secrets Reporters and its journalists, including Stanley Ugagbe, insisting that legal action would not deter their investigative reporting.

The journalist's allegations have generated discussion on social media regarding press freedom, accountability, and the prosecution of corruption-related cases.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not publicly responded to Oliver's latest claims. Likewise, the allegations against David Umahi and Emem Usoro have not been established by a court of law, and no official findings have been presented to substantiate the accusations contained in Oliver's statement.

The matters referenced by Oliver remain subject to ongoing legal and investigative processes where applicable, and all individuals mentioned are entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven otherwise in a court of competent jurisdiction.
