A panel of political analysts has described a recent court judgment affirming the leadership of an opposition party as a positive development for Nigeria’s democracy, while expressing differing opinions on what it means for the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a televised political affairs programme, the analysts examined the significance of the court ruling, the opposition’s readiness for the next election cycle, Peter Obi’s renewed emphasis on national unity, and the implications of the United States’ reported troop withdrawal from Nigeria.
One of the analysts argued that although the court’s decision was welcome, Nigeria’s democracy would benefit from resolving more political disputes internally rather than relying heavily on judicial intervention.
"It's a good development for democracy, but we need to stop having too many issues for the courts to decide. Political parties should strengthen their internal processes," he said.
Another analyst, identified as a member of the opposition, welcomed the judgment, saying it restores confidence in democratic institutions and signals that opposition parties remain prepared to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
According to him, the ruling demonstrates that Nigeria's political space should remain competitive rather than becoming dominated by a single political force.
However, a representative of the ruling party dismissed suggestions that the judgment poses a threat to the governing party, insisting that the APC remains fully prepared for any electoral contest.
He also urged political actors to consistently respect judicial decisions regardless of whether they favour their parties.
"We should praise the judiciary when judgments go our way and also respect it when they don't," he stated.
The discussion shifted to Peter Obi's recent declaration that national unity would be the foundation of his administration if elected president.
While one analyst acknowledged that unity is an important objective, he questioned how such promises would be translated into practical policies.
He argued that many politicians often present attractive visions without clearly explaining their implementation strategies.
"Policies are easy to write. The real issue is the political will and competence to implement them," he said.
Defending Obi's position, an opposition representative maintained that the former presidential candidate possesses the leadership qualities required to foster national cohesion.
He also criticised the current administration, arguing that some of its political decisions had deepened divisions across the country.
In response, the APC representative questioned Obi's ability to unite Nigeria, pointing to internal disagreements that occurred during his time in previous political parties.
According to him, managing a nation as diverse as Nigeria requires proven leadership capacity beyond campaign promises.
