A civic engagement initiative aimed at increasing youth participation in Nigeria's democratic process has recorded a significant milestone, with more than 200 young Nigerians successfully completing their online voter registration.
The Permanent Voter's Card (PVC) registration campaign was organized by the Citizens Application for Political Participation (CAP) in collaboration with the Global Shapers Community and Enough is Enough (EiE) Nigeria. The initiative sought not only to help eligible Nigerians register to vote but also to deepen civic awareness and encourage active participation in governance.
Beyond facilitating voter registration, the campaign featured civic education sessions that highlighted the importance of voting, democratic accountability and responsible citizenship. Participants were also educated on the role of informed voters in strengthening democracy and promoting transparent governance.
According to the organizers, many of the newly registered voters admitted they likely would not have taken the initiative to register without the campaign's outreach, guidance and support. They said the response underscores the need for continuous civic education and targeted engagement to address voter apathy, particularly among young people.
The organizers noted that empowering young Nigerians to participate in elections is critical to building a more inclusive and representative democracy. They expressed optimism that the campaign would inspire first-time voters to remain actively involved in civic and political processes beyond election periods.
The initiative also generated strong interest in the CAP Club, a youth-focused leadership programme designed to equip students with civic leadership skills, encourage volunteerism and inspire greater participation in community development and public service. Through the programme, young people are expected to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to contribute meaningfully to decision-making processes in their schools and communities.
The campaign comes as stakeholders across Nigeria continue to advocate increased youth participation in elections, noting that young people make up a significant proportion of the country's population and have an important role to play in shaping its democratic future.
Organizers say they plan to expand similar voter education and civic engagement initiatives to reach more communities ahead of future elections, with the goal of increasing voter participation and fostering a stronger culture of democratic engagement among Nigerian youths.
