Vice President Shettima Praises Lagos, Says City Contributed to Africa’s Wealth Creation

Vice President Kashim Shettima has praised Lagos State for its role in shaping Africa’s economic landscape, stating that the city has played a significant part in the rise of some of the continent’s wealthiest individuals.

Speaking in a public remark, Shettima highlighted the business environment in Lagos, describing it as a major hub for commerce, investment, and entrepreneurship in Africa.

“It was Lagos that donated to Africa its richest man, not Kano. Aliko Dangote is a Lagos man,” Shettima said. “Again, it is not Kano but Lagos that gave Africa its second-richest man, Abdul Samad Rabiu. Lagos has a big heart.”

His comments were made in the context of discussing economic development and the importance of cities that provide enabling environments for large-scale business growth.

Shettima further emphasized Lagos’ role as a commercial gateway, noting that its infrastructure, population size, and business-friendly environment have continued to attract investors from across Nigeria and beyond.

The remarks have since generated conversations on social media, with some users interpreting them as praise for Lagos’ economic influence, while others debated the classification of business origins and identity in relation to corporate headquarters and residency.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response or clarification from other political stakeholders regarding the Vice President’s statement.
