Troops Rescue 10 Abducted NECO Candidates, Teachers After Terror Attack on Borno School

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have rescued 10 students and teachers who were abducted during Monday's terrorist attack on St. Peter's College, Lassa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to military authorities, the successful rescue followed a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving ground troops and the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai.

The military disclosed that intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft, alongside air strike platforms, were deployed to support the operation, while troops pursued the fleeing terrorists through the Dagu axis.

The victims, who include candidates preparing to sit for the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations and members of staff, were rescued unharmed and are currently receiving medical attention and psychosocial support.

The operation was launched shortly after terrorists invaded the technical secondary school, disrupting what was expected to be a routine examination day. Armed insurgents reportedly stormed the school while students were waiting to write their NECO examinations, abducting several candidates and teachers before fleeing into nearby bush paths.

Military authorities praised the swift response of personnel on the ground, noting that the rapid deployment of troops, supported by aerial surveillance and intelligence, helped locate the abductors and secure the release of some of the victims within hours of the attack.

Efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining abductees, with security forces maintaining pressure on the fleeing terrorists.

The latest rescue operation highlights the continued efforts of troops fighting insurgency in the North-East, where schools and civilian communities have repeatedly been targeted by terrorist groups in recent years.

Residents of Lassa commended the security forces for their quick intervention, expressing hope that those still in captivity would be rescued safely.

Security has since been reinforced around the affected community and surrounding areas as military operations continue to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents and educational institutions.

Military authorities reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining operations against terrorist groups in the region and assured the public that every effort is being made to secure the release of the remaining victims.
