Sheikh Daood Molaasan Criticizes Sunday Igboho Over Claims on Confronting Bandits

The Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Sheikh Daood Molaasan, has criticized comments attributed to Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho, in which he reportedly claimed he could confront armed bandits if given the opportunity.

In a statement circulating online, the cleric questioned the credibility of such assertions, arguing that individuals with genuine capacity to tackle armed groups would not need to publicly announce their intentions beforehand.

“If someone truly has the power to face the bandits, there will be no need to announce it first,” Sheikh Molaasan said.

He further stated that real ability would be demonstrated through action rather than verbal declarations, adding that such individuals would “simply disappear and appear wherever the bandits are” instead of making public comments.

The cleric also referenced historical coexistence between communities such as Ile-Ife and Modakeke, noting that despite past tensions, both have not been defined by sustained violence or brutality toward one another.

Sheikh Molaasan additionally commented on a reported past encounter involving operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), during which he alleged that Igboho scaled a fence and fled the premises, suggesting restraint on the part of security personnel during the incident.

The remarks have sparked mixed reactions online, with supporters of the activist describing the comments as unfair, while others view them as a call for more responsible public discourse on national security matters.

As of the time of filing this report, Sunday Igboho has not issued an official response to the cleric’s latest comments.
