Fresh controversy has emerged in the ongoing debate surrounding the operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), following claims made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole and the Senate's subsequent efforts to distance itself from some of his comments.
The development comes amid allegations that the daughter of Senate President Godswill Akpabio was allegedly appointed to a lucrative position within NNPC Ltd through political connections. The claim reportedly surfaced during an interview in which Senator Adams Oshiomhole questioned what he described as the increasing trend of political influence and favoritism in public appointments.
However, Akpabio has firmly denied the allegation, stating that none of his daughters is employed by NNPC Ltd or any federal government parastatal. He maintained that the claims are false and misleading, insisting that his family members are not beneficiaries of such appointments.
Notably, Oshiomhole did not provide documentary evidence to support the allegation during the interview.
Meanwhile, the controversy took another turn after the Senate leadership moved to officially dissociate the upper legislative chamber from Oshiomhole's characterization of NNPC Ltd officials as "criminals" and "thieves."
The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, reportedly sponsored an urgent motion clarifying that Oshiomhole's comments do not represent the official position of the Senate.
According to the motion, ongoing investigations involving NNPC Ltd must be conducted in accordance with due process, and no conclusions should be drawn before competent authorities complete their work. The Senate further urged lawmakers and committees to exercise caution in making public statements that could prejudice ongoing investigations.
The motion also clarified that only the Senate President has the authority to initiate certain parliamentary actions on behalf of the Senate and emphasized that any attempt to compel witnesses must follow established legal procedures.
In addition, lawmakers stressed that arrest warrants or similar enforcement actions can only be authorized through appropriate judicial processes, reinforcing the principle that investigations must remain within the bounds of the law.
Despite the Senate's intervention, concerns over allegations of about ₦210 trillion in unaccounted funds linked to NNPC Ltd remain unresolved. The issue continues to generate public interest, with calls growing louder for transparency and accountability in the management of the country's oil revenues.
Some commentators have argued that rather than relying on verbal accusations and counterclaims, authorities should commission an independent forensic audit to verify disputed documents, signatures, and financial records connected to the matter.
Analysts say a comprehensive forensic investigation could help establish the authenticity of contested documents and determine whether any wrongdoing occurred, thereby providing clarity on issues that have become the subject of intense political debate.
As the controversy unfolds, observers maintain that credible evidence and transparent investigations will be critical in determining the facts behind the allegations and restoring public confidence in the institutions involved.
