Political commentator Sumner Sambo has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reposition itself as a youth-driven political movement by integrating more young people into leadership roles within its structures.
In a statement shared publicly, Sambo emphasized the importance of youth participation in political decision-making, arguing that political parties that empower young people are more likely to remain competitive in modern democratic systems.
“The NDC must position itself as a youth-led party and give young people leadership roles within its structures to appear more attractive than the APC and other parties,” he said.
He further suggested that increased youth involvement would enhance the party’s visibility, innovation, and electoral appeal, particularly among Nigeria’s large youthful population.
The remarks have sparked discussion among political observers, with some agreeing that political renewal in Nigeria requires greater youth inclusion, while others argue that leadership selection should be based on experience, competence, and internal party dynamics rather than age alone.
Analysts note that political parties across Nigeria have continued to face pressure to accommodate younger demographics, especially as youth activism and voter engagement grow in national elections.
As of the time of filing this report, the NDC had not issued an official response to the statement.
