Presidency Reaffirms Commitment to Security as Public Debates Accountability in Local Government Spending

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, Dr. Sunday Dare, has said the President is deeply concerned about recent cases of abductions and insecurity across parts of the country.

In a statement shared on social media, Dare noted that the Federal Government is actively responding to the security situation, adding that ongoing rescue operations and strategic decisions are being implemented by security agencies. He, however, stated that certain operational details cannot be made public due to the sensitive nature of security missions.

According to him, Nigerian troops are actively engaged and working to ensure the safe rescue of abducted victims while stabilizing affected areas.

Meanwhile, parallel public discussions have emerged online regarding governance and accountability at the local government level, particularly in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area.

Some commentators have raised questions about the utilization of statutory allocations received by the local government from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), alleging that despite significant monthly revenue inflows, development indicators such as school renovation, healthcare infrastructure, and local security support remain limited.

The claims circulating online suggest that Oriire Local Government receives an estimated average of ₦485 million monthly, prompting calls for increased transparency and more visible impact on public services and security infrastructure.

Public commentators have urged anti-corruption and oversight institutions, including the Fiscal Responsibility Commission and other relevant agencies, to review local government expenditure patterns and ensure accountability in the use of public funds.

As of the time of filing this report, local government authorities in Oriire have not publicly responded to the allegations or provided a breakdown of recent expenditure.

Security analysts continue to emphasize that tackling insecurity requires coordinated efforts between federal, state, and local authorities, alongside effective use of public resources for community protection and development.

The Federal Government has maintained that efforts are ongoing to address security challenges nationwide while strengthening institutional accountability.
