Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo has stirred political debate after expressing strong support for former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, while urging veteran politicians to consider stepping aside.
In a statement circulating online, Okonkwo said he would directly advise prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and President Bola Tinubu, to step down in favor of Obi.
“If I see Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu, I will tell them to step down for Peter Obi because Obi is far better than all of them,” he said.
The comment has generated widespread reactions across Nigeria’s political space, with supporters of Obi praising the endorsement as a reflection of growing youth-driven political sentiment, while critics dismissed it as subjective and politically motivated.
Okonkwo, a known supporter of the Labour Party during the 2023 general elections, has remained vocal in national political discourse, often advocating for leadership change and governance reform.
Political analysts note that endorsements from public figures continue to play a role in shaping voter sentiment, particularly among younger demographics ahead of future elections.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Atiku Abubakar nor Bola Tinubu has publicly responded to the statement.
