Social commentator Isaac Fayose has praised social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) for participating in a recent protest, while criticizing what he described as public reluctance to speak out against insecurity and governance challenges.
In a statement circulating online, Fayose argued that citizens possess significant influence when united, stressing that public action can be a powerful tool for demanding accountability from leaders.
“VeryDarkMan for a reason. The power of the people is more than the power of the people in government,” he said.
Fayose went on to criticize the current administration, describing it as the worst government since Nigeria's return to democratic rule, while expressing concern about insecurity in parts of the country, including Ekiti State.
According to him, residents facing security challenges should be willing to publicly demand action from authorities.
“Ekiti are facing insecurity and they can’t protest. VeryDarkMan, a small boy led a protest yesterday. VeryDarkMan is rich and he still protested but Ekiti people are poor and are still scared to protest,” he added.
The remarks have sparked debate on social media, with some users agreeing that citizens should be more active in demanding solutions to national problems, while others argued that security concerns, fear of reprisals, and economic hardship often discourage public demonstrations.
The comments also highlight the growing influence of social media personalities and online activists in shaping public discourse on governance, accountability, and civic engagement in Nigeria.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Government nor officials in Ekiti State had responded directly to Fayose’s remarks.
