Human Rights Lawyer Raises Alarm Over Killings in Osun

Elsewhere, concerns have continued to mount over reported cases of alleged politically motivated killings and extrajudicial executions in Osun State.

A human rights lawyer, accompanied by the Accord Party's campaign spokesperson, submitted a petition at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, calling for urgent intervention by the Nigeria Police Force.

The petitioners alleged that the number of violent attacks and suspected politically motivated killings in Osun State has become increasingly alarming.

According to the campaign spokesperson, more than 10 people have reportedly been killed within the past two months, while several petitions submitted to security authorities have yet to produce meaningful action.

"We must not allow this situation to continue. In just two months, over ten people have been gunned down, yet there has been no decisive response from the Commissioner of Police despite several petitions," he alleged.

The petition called for a comprehensive investigation into all reported cases, urging security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The petitioners further appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to ensure justice for victims and restore public confidence in law enforcement.

The development comes amid growing calls from civil society organisations and political stakeholders for greater accountability, professionalism, and impartiality by security agencies in handling politically related violence.

Observers say the allegations underscore the need for swift investigations to prevent further escalation of tensions as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Federal Government, political parties, and security agencies are expected to continue engaging stakeholders on issues relating to economic reforms, democratic governance, and national security as preparations for the next electoral cycle gather momentum.
