Experts Discuss West African Regional Currency

The Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Professor Abubakar Suleiman, has called for a cautious and evidence-driven approach to proposals for a regional currency and monetary integration among West African countries.

Speaking during a one-day policy dialogue on regional monetary integration held in Abuja, Professor Suleiman described the proposal as one of the most significant economic and political initiatives currently under consideration in the region.

He said introducing a common regional currency would require careful assessment of its potential impact on national economies, fiscal stability, regional trade, and long-term development priorities.

According to him, policymakers must rely on empirical evidence rather than political sentiment before making decisions that could affect millions of people across West Africa.
