ESUT Student’s Viral Video Sparks Debate Over Late-Night Prayers in Hostel

A student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has gone viral after posting a video explaining why she has been unable to sleep in her hostel.

According to the student, the disturbance comes from a neighbor in Room 129 who allegedly engages in loud midnight prayers, shouting, “kabashing,” and praying intensely almost every night. In the clip, the student recorded the time as exactly 1:53 AM, claiming the noise regularly keeps other residents awake.

The video quickly spread across social media, triggering divided reactions among Nigerians. Some users defended the late-night prayers, arguing that students have the right to practice their faith freely and seek spiritual strength, especially in challenging times. Others, however, sympathized with the student who posted the complaint, insisting that hostel residents also deserve peace, rest, and consideration from neighbors.

Many commenters called for balance, suggesting that religious activities should be conducted in ways that do not disrupt others, particularly in shared living environments like student hostels. Some also urged school authorities to establish clearer hostel guidelines regarding noise levels and quiet hours.

The incident has reignited broader conversations about religious expression, personal boundaries, and coexistence in campus communities, with many emphasizing the need for mutual respect among students.

As of the time of reporting, the management of ESUT has not issued an official statement concerning the viral video or the complaints raised by the student.
