Deji Adeyanju Questions Relief Visit to Family of Slain Oyo Teacher, Says Focus Should Be on Justice and Recovery of Remains

Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has criticized what he described as an inadequate response to the killing of a mathematics teacher in Oyo State, following reports that President Bola Tinubu’s daughter visited the deceased’s family with relief items, including two bags of rice and ₦500,000 in cash.

According to Adeyanju, who said he represented the late teacher's family, the gesture, while charitable, does not address the underlying issues surrounding the case.

“President Tinubu’s daughter visited the wife of our late client in Oyo State with two bags of rice and ₦500,000,” Adeyanju said.

He further argued that the government should prioritize security and efforts to recover the remains of the deceased.

“We insist that rice is not the solution to insecurity in Nigeria. The Tinubu-led government has failed to recover the body of our late client so that his family can give him a proper burial,” he stated.

In a separate remark that has generated reactions online, Adeyanju questioned the repeated use of food donations in response to tragedies, asking: “What is the issue with this family and rice?”

The comments have sparked debate on social media, with some Nigerians defending the visit as a compassionate gesture toward a grieving family, while others echoed calls for stronger action on insecurity and accountability.

The case has renewed discussions about the impact of violent crime on communities and the responsibilities of government institutions in supporting victims' families beyond emergency relief.

As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official response from the Presidency regarding Adeyanju’s comments. The circumstances surrounding the recovery of the teacher’s remains also remain unclear.
