Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has announced his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
Lawal alleged that the party’s presidential primary process was manipulated in favour of Atiku, describing the outcome as a “predetermined arrangement” that did not reflect a fair contest among aspirants.
According to him, the development made it impossible for him to continue his association with the party, insisting that internal democracy must be upheld in political parties for credibility and public trust.
The former SGF further stated that he would not support what he described as an already arranged political outcome, adding that his decision was guided by principle rather than personal interest.
In a more controversial remark, Lawal also claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would make a better leader than Atiku Abubakar, a statement that has already triggered reactions across Nigeria’s political space.
The comments have intensified ongoing political tensions within opposition circles, with analysts noting that disputes over party primaries and candidate selection have continued to shape alliances and defections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As of the time of filing this report, the African Democratic Congress has not issued an official response to Lawal’s resignation or his allegations regarding the party’s internal processes.
Political observers say the development highlights deepening divisions within Nigeria’s opposition landscape as parties reposition themselves for the next electoral cycle.
