Former presidential aide and media commentator, Reuben Abati, has called for an urgent investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) into allegations surrounding access to the backend system of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission).
Abati made the call in reaction to public discussions involving media aide Lere Olayinka, urging him to provide a clear explanation of how he allegedly gained access to sensitive parts of the electoral platform.
According to him, the situation raises serious concerns about cybersecurity, transparency, and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral infrastructure, stressing that any perceived unauthorized access must be thoroughly investigated by relevant security agencies.
“The DSS should immediately investigate Lere Olayinka to determine how he gained access to the backend server of the INEC portal,” Abati stated. “He must also publicly explain the means by which he accessed the system.”
He further argued that failure to provide a satisfactory explanation should prompt INEC to reconsider its digital access protocols, insisting that transparency demands equal scrutiny of all claims involving electoral systems.
Abati also warned that selective or unclear access to electoral infrastructure could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process, especially at a time when digital tools play an increasingly important role in elections.
As of the time of filing this report, neither INEC nor Lere Olayinka has issued an official response to the latest comments.
Cybersecurity experts continue to emphasize that claims involving system access should be verified through technical audits and official investigations rather than public speculation.
The issue has continued to generate debate online, with Nigerians divided over concerns of electoral transparency, digital security, and political communication in the country’s democratic space.
