The Young Farmers in Nigeria (YoFiN), in partnership with the Nigeria Youth Climate Negotiators Network (NYCNN), has hosted a virtual X Space dialogue focused on the intersection of climate change and food security, with special attention to the experiences of young farmers in Nigeria.
The session, titled “Climate Change and Food Security: What It Means for Young Farmers Today,” provided a platform for open exchange between young agricultural practitioners, climate advocates, and development stakeholders. It explored how changing climate conditions are increasingly shaping agricultural outcomes, disrupting food systems, and influencing the livelihoods of young people engaged in farming activities across the country.
Four speakers with expertise in agriculture, climate action, and youth engagement led the discussion, offering perspectives on the realities facing smallholder and emerging farmers. They highlighted how unpredictable rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, soil degradation, and other climate-related challenges are contributing to reduced productivity and increased uncertainty in food production systems.
Participants also shared experiences from different regions, contributing to a broader understanding of how climate impacts vary across Nigeria’s agricultural zones. The dialogue encouraged knowledge sharing on adaptive strategies and emphasized the importance of collective action among young stakeholders.
Although the session experienced intermittent network disruptions that briefly affected connectivity for some participants, engagement remained steady, with active contributions throughout the discussion.
Key highlights and outcomes from the dialogue included:
Improved understanding among young farmers of how climate change directly affects agricultural productivity and food security outcomes.
Renewed emphasis on the importance of youth participation in climate governance and agricultural policy formulation.
Strong advocacy for the adoption and scaling of climate-smart agricultural practices to strengthen resilience and productivity.
Strengthened collaboration between young farmers and youth climate negotiators to jointly push for supportive and inclusive climate policies.
The dialogue concluded with a shared recognition that young farmers are central to Nigeria’s response to climate change, particularly in driving innovation, resilience, and sustainability within the agricultural sector.
Organizers noted that continued engagement of this nature will be essential in bridging gaps between climate policy discussions and on-the-ground agricultural realities, especially for youth who represent a significant portion of Nigeria’s farming population.
