UniJos Students Accuse Police of Harassment, Unlawful Phone Searches During Stop-and-Search Operation

Students of the University of Jos (University of Jos) have accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force of harassment and unlawful phone searches during a stop-and-search operation near the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom.

According to accounts shared by some students, the incident occurred when police officers mounted a stop-and-search checkpoint in the area, where several commuters and students were allegedly stopped and subjected to searches beyond standard procedures.

Some of the affected students alleged that their mobile phones were inspected without clear justification, raising concerns over privacy violations and abuse of authority.

The students described the experience as intimidating, calling for stricter adherence to professional conduct by law enforcement officers during routine security operations.

The Nigeria Police Force has not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations as of the time of reporting.

The incident has sparked renewed debate on social media about policing methods in Nigeria, particularly regarding stop-and-search operations and citizens’ rights to privacy and due process.

Authorities are yet to confirm whether an internal investigation will be launched into the complaints.
