Social media commentator Akin Olaoye, popularly known as @akintollgate, has defended nightlife entrepreneur and influencer Yhemolee following online criticism surrounding his claim of earning ₦100 million during the COVID-19 period.
Yhemolee had earlier revealed in an interview that he made his first ₦1 million while in university and later earned ₦100 million in 2020, a statement that sparked skepticism among some Nigerians who questioned the legitimacy of such earnings during a pandemic marked by economic restrictions.
Reacting to the backlash, Olaoye dismissed allegations suggesting the income may have come from illicit activities, describing such claims as products of envy and misunderstanding of Lagos’ nightlife economy at the time.
According to him, several beach and club locations around Elegushi and Ilashe remained highly profitable, with businesses reportedly generating tens of millions of naira weekly through alcohol sales and premium nightlife experiences. He argued that while many people stayed indoors during lockdown periods, entertainment entrepreneurs continued to run lucrative operations within permitted spaces.
Olaoye also referenced music executive Ubi Franklin, claiming that digital engagement and social media activities similarly generated significant income streams during the same period.
He criticised what he described as attempts by “internet warriors” to discredit individuals’ hard work without understanding the business dynamics behind the entertainment and hospitality industry.
The comments have added another layer to the ongoing online debate about wealth transparency, social media perception, and the economic realities of Nigeria’s nightlife sector during the COVID-19 era.
