Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has shared his views on political ambition and public service, stressing that leadership positions should not be imposed on the electorate.
In a statement attributed to him, Jonathan said individuals with strong personal ambition are free to pursue business opportunities, while those seeking public office must accept the will of the people.
“If you are so ambitious then go and do business. If you want to serve the people and the people don’t want you, go and sleep. You cannot force me to take you to serve me,” he was quoted as saying.
The remarks have since generated reactions across political and social circles, with many interpreting them as a broader reflection on democratic choice and voter sovereignty in electoral systems.
Political observers note that the comment underscores the importance of consent in leadership selection, emphasizing that elected office is ultimately determined by the electorate.
As of the time of reporting, the former president has not issued additional clarification beyond the widely circulated statement.
