A moment of confusion reportedly occurred during an international medal presentation involving Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan after event organizers allegedly questioned which version of Nigeria’s national anthem should be played.
According to an eyewitness account shared online, officials handling the ceremony approached members of the Nigerian contingent to confirm whether the anthem played during the presentation was Nigeria’s current official anthem.
The account claimed that Amusan laughed off the situation and referred the organizers to another Nigerian official for clarification.
The organizers were reportedly informed that the anthem played was the country’s former national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” which had previously been replaced before discussions around the reintroduction of Nigeria’s old anthem resurfaced nationally.
