Tension has reportedly escalated again in Jos following fresh violence that erupted on Wednesday after authorities relaxed the previously imposed 48-hour curfew in the city.
The curfew, which was adjusted to run from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., was introduced to allow residents resume essential daily activities after the deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba community. However, the easing of restrictions allegedly triggered renewed unrest, as angry mobs and suspected hoodlums attacked motorists and pedestrians across several parts of the city.
Eyewitness accounts claim that a young man walking near the permanent site of the University of Jos was beaten to death by a mob during the chaos. Authorities have yet to officially confirm the casualty at the time of this report.
Reports indicate that multiple vehicles were vandalized, with windscreens smashed in areas including Terminus, Bauchi Road, Farin Gada, Tina Junction, Chobe, and along the University of Jos axis.
The renewed violence forced many businesses to shut down abruptly, leaving banks, markets, and shops closed as residents rushed home amid fears of further attacks. A trader at Terminus Market, identified as Joy Bature, expressed concern over the situation, saying traders were too frightened to reopen their shops due to uncertainty about security conditions.
Meanwhile, the University of Jos Alumni Association has called on the Plateau State Government and security agencies to strengthen security presence around university campuses, student hostels, and major roads to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
Security agencies have not yet released an official statement detailing arrests or measures being taken to restore calm, as residents continue to appeal for urgent intervention to prevent further violence.
