Solomon Dalung Questions INEC Chairman’s Integrity, Cites Alleged Academic Irregularities

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has publicly criticized the integrity of INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan, raising concerns about his past tenure in academia.

Dalung alleged that while Professor Amupitan was Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos (Unijos) during the 2009/2010 academic session, the faculty traded the results of 16 second class upper students, an act he claims reflected a lack of transparency and ethical oversight.

“INEC CHAIRMAN, Professor Joash Amupitan has no integrity,” Dalung stated in his social media post, linking the alleged past academic misconduct to questions about his suitability to lead the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Dalung’s comments have sparked debate among Nigerians, with some agreeing that past professional conduct can inform public office accountability, while others urge caution, emphasizing the need for verified evidence before drawing conclusions about current roles.

As the nation continues to scrutinize INEC’s preparedness for upcoming elections, such criticisms have added another layer to the ongoing discourse on leadership, credibility, and electoral integrity in Nigeria.
