Tension heightened in Abuja as protesters reportedly gathered at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), expressing frustration over the state of Nigeria’s electoral process and governance.
The demonstration followed viral remarks by political commentator Peter Akah, who questioned what he described as the imbalance of power within the country’s political system. In a widely circulated statement, Akah said:
“How can you get 30 governors, the entire National Assembly, you control INEC, the police, DSS, and yet you’re afraid of a free and fair election?”
Videos shared online showed groups of citizens chanting and demanding electoral transparency while calling for reforms within the electoral system. Some protesters claimed Nigerians were “tired” of alleged irregularities and demanded credible elections going forward.
Security personnel were deployed around the commission’s headquarters to maintain order and prevent escalation. Authorities have not confirmed any arrests or incidents of violence as of the time of filing this report.
Political analysts say the protest reflects growing public concern about electoral credibility ahead of future elections, with citizens increasingly using public demonstrations and social media to express dissatisfaction.
INEC has yet to release an official statement responding directly to the protest or Akah’s remarks. Meanwhile, observers have urged calm and called on stakeholders to allow democratic institutions to function within the rule of law.
