Nurses who appeared in a viral video appealing to the Enugu State Government to intervene in the condition of Uwani General Hospital have reportedly cried out after allegedly being suspended by the hospital’s management.
The health workers had earlier drawn public attention to what they described as poor working conditions and infrastructural challenges at the hospital, urging authorities to urgently address the situation. The video gained widespread traction online, prompting reactions from residents and stakeholders in the health sector.
Following the public outcry, the Enugu State Government reportedly issued a formal query to the hospital management seeking explanations over the issues highlighted in the footage. Sources indicate that corrective actions were quickly initiated, with reports suggesting that several of the problems raised in the video had been addressed and fixed as of yesterday.
However, the nurses involved now claim they are facing disciplinary measures. According to them, they were instructed not to resume duty and were handed what they described as an indefinite suspension by the institution linked to the hospital.
The affected workers allege that the decision has left them distressed, insisting that their intention was to advocate for improved healthcare services rather than discredit the facility. They have called on relevant authorities and professional bodies to intervene and ensure fairness in the handling of the matter.
As of the time of filing this report, officials of Uwani General Hospital have not publicly responded to the suspension allegations, while the Enugu State Government is yet to issue an updated statement regarding the nurses’ claims.
The incident has sparked debate online, with many Nigerians questioning the treatment of whistleblowers in the healthcare system and calling for protections for workers who raise concerns about public service conditions.
