Man Shares Heartbreaking Encounter with Soldier Struggling Amid Salary Delays

A man identified as BMT Ebira has shared a deeply moving account of his encounter with a Nigerian soldier, highlighting the personal struggles faced by members of the nation’s armed forces.

According to Ebira, he was stopped by a soldier while returning to Abuja and agreed to give him a lift. During the ride, the soldier revealed he was heading to Zuba to visit his newborn twins for the first time in ten months, having been unable to secure leave. Tragically, the soldier said that one of his babies had already died, and his wife urged him to come quickly to see the surviving twin.

The soldier explained that he had been waiting for his salary, which had not been paid despite it being the 2nd of the month. He showed Ebira the ₦4,500 he had on him—insufficient for completing the journey. Deeply moved, Ebira gave the soldier ₦20,000 and promised to follow up on the family.

Reflecting on the encounter, Ebira posed a sobering question: “Are these the soldiers we expect to lay down their lives in our protection? You’re owing soldiers, and you want them to be effective while fighting insecurity?”

The story has resonated with many Nigerians on social media, sparking discussions about the welfare of soldiers and the critical need for timely payment of salaries and adequate support for military personnel.

This incident highlights the personal sacrifices and challenges faced by members of the armed forces, many of whom continue to serve under difficult conditions while confronting the nation’s security challenges.
