Atiku, Peter Obi, David Mark, Amaechi Lead ADC ‘Occupy INEC’ Protest in Abuja

Prominent Nigerian political figures on Wednesday converged in the nation’s capital for a high-profile demonstration organized by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), dubbed the “Occupy INEC” protest.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi led the protest, which aimed to express public concern over perceived “partisanship” within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Other notable participants included Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections; former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola; former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso; and ex-Senator Dino Melaye.

The demonstrators marched toward INEC’s headquarters in Abuja, holding banners and placards calling for transparency and impartiality in electoral processes. Leaders of the ADC said the protest was intended to demand accountability from INEC and to ensure that future elections in Nigeria are free, fair, and credible.

Speaking to the crowd, ADC National Chairman David Mark emphasized that the protest was not partisan, but rather a call for strengthened electoral integrity. The demonstration remained peaceful, with security forces monitoring the situation and maintaining order throughout the event.

Political analysts note that the protest highlights ongoing concerns among opposition leaders about electoral fairness in Nigeria, and may intensify calls for reforms in the country’s electoral system ahead of upcoming elections.
