Leaders and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside supporters and pro-democracy advocates, have called on Nigerians to unite in defence of democratic values, warning against what they described as the danger of a one-party political system in the country.
In a statement shared publicly, the group declared that Nigeria’s democracy must be protected at all costs, urging citizens across political, ethnic, and religious divides to stand together in support of unity, peace, and national security.
“We, members and leaders of the ADC, and other well-meaning Nigerians, lovers of democracy, are saying that our democracy must not be killed. We say NO to a one-party system,” the statement read.
The message, endorsed by supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi popularly associated with the slogan “A New Nigeria is Possible” called on Nigerians to actively participate in civic engagement and democratic processes.
According to the group, sustained citizen participation and political pluralism remain essential pillars for strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring accountability in governance.
The call has sparked conversations across social media, with supporters praising the initiative as a necessary reminder of democratic responsibility, while critics argue that political competition naturally evolves through electoral outcomes rather than coordinated resistance narratives.
Political analysts say the statement reflects increasing mobilisation among opposition voices and civil society actors ahead of future electoral cycles, as debates around governance, political dominance, and institutional independence continue to shape Nigeria’s political landscape.
No official response has yet been issued by the federal government regarding the statement. Observers expect more political alignments and public engagements in the coming months as parties and interest groups reposition within Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.
