Many Nigerians have taken to social media to express deep frustration over the growing negative impact of internet fraud, popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo, describing it as a menace that has damaged the nation’s reputation, economy, and moral fabric.
According to several online commentators, Yahoo boys are not only defrauding unsuspecting victims abroad but also destroying public trust and Nigeria’s global image, leading to stigmatization and loss of opportunities for honest citizens.
“Yahoo boys do not only kill but prey on people’s trust and gullibility,” one user wrote. “They’ve made the world see all Nigerians as scammers, costing us jobs, visas, and respect.”
Others lamented that the ripple effects of cybercrime have made the cost of living increasingly high and have corrupted social and cultural values, especially among the youth.
“They have polluted the dating scene by setting unrealistic standards,” another Nigerian commented. “Many young people now see money — no matter how it’s made — as a symbol of respect. They’ve replaced hard work with greed.”
Critics further noted that the glamorization of internet fraud in music, movies, and social media has worsened the problem, with some youths idolizing fraudsters as symbols of success.
Analysts warn that beyond the economic consequences, the moral decay caused by the Yahoo culture poses a long-term threat to Nigeria’s social stability and credibility.
As calls for ethical reorientation grow louder, Nigerians are urging government agencies, faith-based institutions, and entertainers to take a firm stand against internet fraud and promote integrity, innovation, and legitimate success among young people.
“You can’t justify Yahoo,” one post concluded. “They are lazy thieves and killers — and they’re ruining our country daily.”
