The 1997 Accident Was My Turning Point — Yinka Ayefele

Renowned gospel musician and broadcaster, Dr. Yinka Ayefele (MON), has described the ghastly accident he had in 1997 as the defining moment that transformed his life and destiny.

Speaking in a recent interview, Ayefele reflected on how the tragic event — which left him confined to a wheelchair — became the foundation upon which his musical and broadcasting success was built.

“The accident that nearly took my life in 1997 was my turning point,” Ayefele said. “At the time, I thought my world had ended, but God used that pain to redirect my path and give me purpose.”

Before the accident, Ayefele was a promising journalist and broadcaster at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Ibadan, with little inclination toward music. However, during his recovery period, he began to write and compose songs — a journey that would later birth his debut album, Bitter Experience, which became an instant hit.

“While I was on the hospital bed, I started composing songs to encourage myself,” he recalled. “Those songs later became my first album. What I saw as a tragedy turned into my testimony.”

Ayefele said his story is proof that setbacks can become stepping stones when faced with faith, resilience, and hard work.

“Sometimes, God uses our pain to prepare us for greater purpose. The accident was not the end of me; it was the beginning of who I am today,” he added.

Today, Yinka Ayefele is not only one of Nigeria’s most celebrated gospel artists but also the founder of the Fresh FM Radio Network, a leading private radio brand operating across several states.
