Super Eagles Stars Reportedly Unhappy Over Delay in Stadium Renovation Despite ₦1.2bn Contribution

Several players of Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, including Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Ademola Lookman, are reportedly unhappy following their return to Nigeria over the delay in renovation works at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Sources close to the team disclosed that after their last AFCON fixture against Egypt, the players collectively contributed about $750,000 (approximately ₦1.2 billion) to the state government to support the upgrade of the stadium facilities.

The funds were reportedly intended to improve critical infrastructure within the stadium, including LED advertising boards, the scoreboard system, floodlights, dressing rooms, and the playing pitch  upgrades considered necessary to maintain international standards for matches and training.

However, months after the donation was made, players were said to be disappointed that renovation works have yet to commence, raising concerns about the utilization of the funds and the pace of administrative action.

Sources indicated that some players expected visible progress before returning for subsequent national assignments, especially given the importance of the stadium as one of Nigeria’s major venues for international football fixtures.

The reported frustration has sparked conversations among football stakeholders and fans, many of whom argue that improved sports infrastructure is essential for the growth of Nigerian football and for maintaining player morale.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Akwa Ibom State Government nor relevant football authorities had issued an official statement addressing the alleged delay or providing updates on the proposed renovation project.

The situation continues to generate reactions online, with supporters urging transparency and swift action to ensure the stadium meets global standards befitting the Super Eagles.
