The Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into a man popularly known as “Shawama” following a viral claim in which he allegedly confessed to killing 32 people while operating as a political thug in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The individual, whose video confession circulated widely on social media, reportedly boasted about his involvement in violent political activities and multiple killings carried out during past electoral conflicts in the city. The disturbing claims sparked outrage among residents and prompted calls for urgent action from security agencies.
In a statement issued by the Oyo State Police Command, authorities confirmed that an investigation had been opened to verify the authenticity of the video and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged confession.
Police officials stated that intelligence teams have begun tracking the suspect while forensic and digital analysts examine the footage to establish whether the claims were genuine or made for publicity or intimidation purposes.
Security experts and civil society groups have expressed concern over the implications of the allegations, noting that political thuggery has long been a challenge during elections in parts of Nigeria. They urged law enforcement agencies to ensure a transparent investigation and prosecute anyone found culpable.
Residents of Ibadan have also called for increased security presence and accountability, emphasizing the need to dismantle networks that allegedly sponsor violence during political contests.
The police assured the public that anyone linked to criminal acts would face the full weight of the law, while also warning against spreading unverified information capable of causing panic.
As investigations continue, authorities have encouraged citizens with useful information to come forward to assist ongoing efforts.
