Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns over what he described as troubling developments in Nigeria’s democratic space following the reported arrest of Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar.
In a statement released on Monday, Obi said he was informed that the respected religious leader was arrested by authorities shortly after hosting him in Kaduna on Sunday, a development he described as worrisome and reflective of growing pressure on civil liberties in the country.
According to Obi, the incident highlights what he sees as an increasingly fragile democratic environment where freedom of speech and movement may be under threat, and where citizens or perceived political opponents allegedly face harassment and persecution.
“This development underscores the deeply troubling state of our nation and our democracy, where freedom of speech and movement is increasingly threatened,” Obi stated, emphasizing that such actions must not be allowed to continue.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that freedom of expression remains a fundamental pillar of any democratic society, warning that suppression and intimidation of dissenting voices undermine democratic principles.
He called on authorities to uphold the rule of law and democratic tenets in dealing with citizens, urging those he accused of undermining democracy to desist from actions capable of weakening public trust in governance.
Obi’s remarks have sparked fresh conversations among political observers and civil society groups about civil rights, political tolerance, and the protection of democratic freedoms in Nigeria.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the cleric’s arrest.
