Outrage as FUTO Lecturer Reportedly Destroys Student’s Project, Claims It Was “Too Good” to Be Theirs

A video making the rounds on social media has sparked outrage after a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) allegedly destroyed an architecture student’s project, accusing the student of not being the original creator of the work.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred during a project presentation session in the Department of Architecture. The lecturer reportedly dismissed the student’s design as “too exceptional” to have been produced by them and proceeded to damage the model in front of other students.

The video, which shows the lecturer angrily tearing apart the project, has drawn widespread condemnation from Nigerians online. Many described the act as unprofessional, humiliating, and a reflection of the toxic culture that discourages creativity and excellence in some academic institutions.

“This is heartbreaking. Instead of commending and encouraging innovation, the lecturer decided to destroy what could have been a brilliant piece of work,” one social media user lamented.

Others have called for the management of FUTO and the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) to investigate the matter, emphasizing that such behavior could discourage talented students from pursuing their passions.

As of the time of this report, FUTO authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

The video continues to trend across social media platforms, reigniting discussions about abuse of power in Nigerian universities and the need for academic reforms that promote mentorship, fairness, and respect for students’ intellectual efforts.
