Mother Raises Alarm Over Rising “Birthday Competition” in Private Schools

A Nigerian mother has sparked debate online after criticizing what she described as growing material competition among pupils in private schools.

In a strongly worded statement, the concerned parent questioned the trend of extravagant birthday celebrations being held within school premises, where children reportedly return home with expensive gifts such as bicycles and branded school bags.

“Imagine your children came back from school with a bicycle and an Echolac bag and you ask them where they got it from and they said their classmate is celebrating their birthday,” she said. “Dear parents and private schools, it’s a school and not a competition ground. If you think because you shared a bicycle to my children on your kid’s birthday and you expect me to share the same thing, you’re joking.”

The mother expressed concern that such gestures, though seemingly generous, may unintentionally create pressure for other families to match the scale of gifts during their own children’s celebrations. She warned that the practice risks turning academic environments into arenas of social comparison rather than learning.

Education stakeholders have long debated the appropriateness of elaborate in-school birthday parties, with some arguing that they foster inclusivity and celebration, while others believe they widen socio-economic gaps among pupils.

The viral complaint has reignited conversations about boundaries, moderation, and the role of schools in managing social activities to ensure they do not create unhealthy competition among children or financial strain on parents.

As discussions continue, many parents are calling for clearer school policies to regulate birthday celebrations and maintain focus on education rather than material display.
