Clarification: Nigerian Government and NNPC Do Not Own Any VLCC Oil Tankers

Reports have emerged confirming that neither the Nigerian government nor NNPC Limited owns any Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) outright.

Industry sources clarified that while the Nigerian oil sector relies heavily on maritime transport for crude oil exports, the government and NNPC typically contract private shipping companies for the transportation of crude and petroleum products. Ownership of VLCCs remains predominantly in the hands of private shipping firms, with NNPC and the government utilizing charter arrangements rather than direct ownership.

Experts note that this clarification is significant in dispelling misconceptions about Nigeria’s oil logistics capabilities and asset holdings. It also highlights the reliance on private partnerships in managing large-scale crude exports efficiently.

The statement has been welcomed by analysts as a step toward greater transparency in the oil and gas sector, particularly regarding the operational roles of government-owned and state-controlled entities in maritime oil transportation.
