Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting he is planning to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that he remains a member of the opposition party despite ongoing political discussions.
Speaking amid growing speculation about his political future, the governor clarified that he has no immediate plans to leave the PDP but acknowledged internal challenges within the party.
“There are rumours that I've joined the APC. I'm not going anywhere, but we have problems in the PDP. Politics is dynamic. We can be anywhere, but certainly, we won't be stupid. We'll be very strategic,” Mohammed stated.
His remarks come days after reports circulated claiming he was negotiating a move to the APC following alleged meetings with key political figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The rumours had sparked debates within political circles and raised concerns among PDP stakeholders about possible high-profile defections.
Political observers interpret the governor’s statement as both a denial of defection and a signal of ongoing strategic positioning within Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. Analysts note that internal disagreements and leadership disputes have continued to challenge cohesion within the PDP in recent months.
Supporters of the governor say his comments reflect pragmatic politics, while critics argue that such statements may deepen uncertainty within party ranks.
As political realignments continue ahead of future electoral cycles, Mohammed’s position is expected to remain closely watched, particularly given his influence within northern politics and the broader opposition structure.
