Abia State Ready for State Police, Says Governor Alex Otti

Governor Alex Otti has declared that Abia State is fully prepared for the establishment of state policing, adding his voice to the growing national conversation on restructuring Nigeria’s security architecture.

Speaking on security reforms, Otti stated that the state government is willing and capable of supporting a decentralized policing system aimed at improving safety and rapid response to local security challenges.

According to the governor, state police would enhance community-based intelligence gathering and allow authorities to address crimes more effectively, particularly those that require local knowledge and faster operational decisions.

He emphasized that insecurity across parts of the country has demonstrated the need for innovative approaches beyond the current centralized policing structure. Otti noted that empowering states with policing authority could strengthen accountability and improve protection for residents.

The governor also assured that necessary frameworks, training structures, and oversight mechanisms would be put in place to prevent abuse and ensure professionalism if state policing becomes constitutionally approved.

The issue of state police has remained a major topic in Nigeria’s security debate, with supporters arguing it would improve law enforcement efficiency, while critics warn about possible political misuse by state governments.

Otti’s statement adds momentum to ongoing discussions among policymakers, security experts, and stakeholders considering reforms to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
