Wike Vows to Back Tinubu-Aligned Candidates in FCT Ahead of February 21 Elections

In a recent development ahead of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections, Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, pledged his support exclusively for candidates aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking on Saturday during the 60th birthday celebration of former senator Sandy Onor in Abuja, Wike said he would ensure that candidates who back the president have an advantage in the upcoming polls scheduled for February 21.

Wike emphasized that party affiliation would not guide his support, making it clear that only alignment with Tinubu’s agenda would determine his backing. “We have the FCT area council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win,” he stated.

The announcement follows a recent public account by President Tinubu, in which he narrated instructing Wike to “give me ANY opportunity for my party to win elections in Abuja” to safeguard his position. Observers note that Wike neither has a strong natural support base in Abuja nor enjoys widespread public goodwill in the FCT, raising questions about the influence of his endorsement.

Political analysts say the statements highlight the high-stakes nature of the upcoming council elections and underscore the growing intertwining of federal influence and local electoral contests in the FCT. Citizens and stakeholders have been urged to closely monitor the polls and ensure that the democratic process is respected.
