Wike Mocks Protesters Advocating for Electronic Transmission of Election Results

Minister and former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has sparked controversy after making remarks perceived as mocking Nigerians who protested at the National Assembly for the direct electronic transmission of election results.

Speaking publicly, Wike said, “Don't be like the few people who protested at the National Assembly and said they’re speaking for Nigerians…” His comment was interpreted as a jibe aimed at former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and other citizens who had participated in demonstrations calling for electoral transparency.

The protests, which advocated for real-time electronic result uploads, were intended to curb post-election manipulations and ensure public trust in the electoral process.

Social media users have reacted sharply to Wike’s comments, with critics accusing him of dismissing citizens’ legitimate demands for election integrity, while supporters argue he was highlighting political posturing.

Election observers note that the debate over electronic transmission of results remains a key point of contention in Nigeria’s electoral reforms, reflecting broader concerns about transparency, accountability, and public participation in the democratic process.
