Umuada in Ohafia Discipline Man for Abusing Elderly Parents

In a striking act of community justice, the Umuada (daughters) of Amaekpu, Ohafia, Abia State have taken it upon themselves to punish a man reportedly found repeatedly abusing his elderly parents.

According to reports, the man had been physically assaulting his mother and father over a prolonged period, prompting the daughters of the community to intervene. In a public disciplinary action, he was reportedly given 30 strokes of the cane as a form of reprimand.

Community leaders stated that the intervention was intended to uphold cultural norms and protect vulnerable members of society. The action has sparked conversations about communal responsibility, elder abuse, and the role of traditional institutions in addressing family conflicts.

While some have praised the Umuada for standing against domestic violence, others caution that legal and formal avenues should also be pursued to ensure justice and prevent escalation.
