President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the submission of his letter citing pressing family considerations.
According to sources within the presidency, Egbetokun formally tendered his resignation, stating that urgent personal and family matters necessitated his decision to step down from the top leadership position of the Nigeria Police Force.
The resignation, which was accepted by the President, marks a significant development in the nation’s security leadership, given Egbetokun’s role in overseeing national policing operations and internal security coordination since his appointment.
Presidential aides disclosed that Tinubu acknowledged the outgoing police chief’s service to the country and his contributions to ongoing reforms within the force, particularly in areas of crime control, intelligence-led policing, and institutional restructuring.
While the Presidency is yet to officially announce a substantive replacement, insiders suggest that arrangements are underway to ensure a seamless transition in leadership to prevent any vacuum in the command structure of the police.
Security analysts note that the resignation comes at a critical time when Nigeria continues to grapple with multiple security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and urban crime, making leadership stability within the police hierarchy a key national priority.
Senior government officials are expected to issue further directives in the coming days regarding interim leadership and the process for appointing a new Inspector-General of Police.
The development has already begun generating reactions across political and security circles, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for continuity in ongoing security strategies and reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
