Residents of Efab Estate, one of Abuja’s popular residential areas, have raised concerns over the yearly increase in house rents, calling on the government to step in and regulate rental practices.
According to residents, annual rent hikes have become unsustainable, with some landlords imposing sharp increases that significantly exceed inflation rates and average household income. Many tenants claim the situation is putting financial pressure on families, forcing some to consider relocating despite long-term ties to the community.
Speaking on behalf of residents, a community spokesperson urged both the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and relevant housing authorities to implement measures to cap rent increases and ensure fair tenancy agreements. “We are appealing to the government to intervene before the situation worsens,” the statement said.
Housing experts say the situation in Efab Estate mirrors a broader challenge in Abuja, where demand for quality housing continues to outpace supply, leading to steep rental growth. They advocate for policy reforms, including rent control frameworks, tenant protection laws, and the promotion of affordable housing schemes.
The FCTA has not yet responded to the appeals, but residents and housing advocacy groups hope that official action will be taken promptly to prevent further hardship for tenants in the estate.
